Walker Manufacturing: Early Years

The company didn’t start with incredible lawn mowers. The founder, Max Walker, started tinkering and building in 1953, at first to entertain his son. When a friend of his in sales saw his work, they planned together to create one of the earliest gas-powered golf cars, which hit the market in 1957. Walker then began building the Walker Power Truck, providing year-round service for delivery businesses and a solid base vehicle for a floor-scrubber.

The First Walker Mowers

Two decades later, the Walkers realized that most riding mowers in 1977 were slow and clumsy. They built their first prototype mower that year and created a fast, simple, and efficient machine with an 11 horsepower engine. The second and third prototypes were built in 1978 and 1979, respectively, improving the steering and handling, a blower in the main chassis, hydrostatic transmissions, and an increased deck size with a dual-timed blade system.

This third prototype made the rounds at state fairs and agricultural shows, and they built 25 units in 1980 themselves. Two years later, they built 125 mowers to meet growing demands. Innovating steadily over the next few decades and growing their operations to meet the ever-higher demand, the company moved into a 76,000 sq. ft. facility in 1990 without missing a beat. Just four years later, they needed a 40,000 sq. ft. addition to keep up with production!
